Ballard Locks
One of the most interesting parts of my Seattle trip. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, they connect the saltwater of Puget Sound to the freshwater of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. It serves as a water level regulator, prevents the mixing of saltwater and freshwater to protect local ecosystems, and has vessel navigation chambers to help boats to navigate between the high and low levels. It also has a fish ladder to help fish to migrate between the saltwater bay and the freshwater grounds.
